Can Your Dentist Tell If You’re Left-Handed?

September 10th, 2025

Sherlock Holmes, that most famous of fictional detectives, observed clues, analyzed them, and used his powers of deduction to arrive at the solution to his cases.

Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban and our team are skilled in deduction as well! By examining your teeth and gums during your regular checkup, important clues can be discovered about your dental health—and perhaps your overall health as well. What might be deduced when you come in for an exam?

  • You Haven’t Been Flossing

Even with some last-minute catchup flossing, it’s not hard to tell if you’ve been regularly skipping the flossing portion of your daily dental care. Plaque that your toothbrush just can’t reach on its own will be noticeable between your teeth and around the gum line. Your gums might be inflamed, swollen or bleeding—early signs of the gum disease plaque causes when it’s not removed with careful flossing.

These symptoms could arise because you’re neglecting to floss at least once a day, or it could be that your flossing skills could simply use some fine-tuning. A refresher in flossing technique takes no time at all. Or, you might discuss whether a water flosser would be a good investment for healthier teeth and gums if, for any reason, you have difficulty flossing effectively.

  • You Haven’t Been Sleeping Well

Even if your roommate or partner hasn’t told you that your teeth and jaws have been grinding away while you were not-so-soundly asleep, your dentist might be able to. Shorter, flattened teeth are a common symptom of bruxism, or tooth grinding. Your exam might reveal cracked enamel or broken cusps caused by the force you’re placing on them at night. This condition can also lead to larger jaw muscles and jaw pain.

Since these symptoms are also caused by sleep apnea, it’s a very good idea to find out what’s causing this dental stress. Treatments are available to make your sleep safer for your teeth and jaws—and more restful and healthier for you!

  • You Should Talk to Your Doctor

Conditions that seem to have nothing to do with your oral health can cause dental symptoms, alerting your dentist to a medical condition which you might not be aware of. Pale gums or a swollen tongue could be symptoms of anemia. Erosion on the inside of the teeth can be caused by GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to ulcers, loose teeth, and gum disease.

If Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban and our team suggest that you make an appointment with your doctor to find the medical cause of your dental symptoms, it’s essential to follow up.

  • Are You Left-Handed?

So, getting back to our original question, can your dentist deduce that you’re left-handed?

Probably not! It’s been suggested that left-handed people brush their teeth more firmly on the left side, and right-handed people brush harder on the right. And it’s also been suggested that left-handers don’t brush the left side of the mouth as thoroughly, while right-handers neglect their dominant side.

But Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban can still tell you some important facts about your hand-brush coordination just by observing the state of your enamel. If you’re brushing too firmly, your tooth surfaces could show erosion and wear. A soft-bristled brush and a lighter hand will get your teeth just as clean without the abrasion.

If you’re having trouble reaching areas because of dexterity issues, Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban can point out the areas where plaque buildup reveals the spots you need to concentrate on. An electric toothbrush might be just the answer to making all the surfaces of your teeth equally accessible.

A dentist is an expert in observing, analyzing, and solving dental problems. When you keep to a regular schedule of exams and cleanings at our Eagle River dental office, you’ll benefit from that expertise to discover oral health issues before they become more serious. That’s an easy and elegant solution to maintaining your dental health. In fact, it’s elementary!

Some Benefits to Giving Your Smile an Extra Boost

September 3rd, 2025

For many individuals, autumn brings with it a number of new beginnings. Fall is the time that many people return to school, get back to the daily grind after an enjoyable summer, and even get married. As the weather cools down, it’s easier to enjoy the outdoors. And regardless of what fall-related events are on your calendar, Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban and our team at Gremban & Gremban Dental know you’ll want to look your best.

One of the very first things that people will notice about you is your smile. And if yours has become less dazzling over the years — as teeth tend to do — you know how disappointing it is not to have the beautiful, pearly white look you’re used to.

Benefits to Teeth Whitening

For school-bound students and autumn brides, fall calendars are certainly filled. School and weddings call for large financial investments, loads of social interaction, and a large amount of personal dedication. So the last thing any bride or student wants to think about is a less-than radiant smile.

For many, there is a lack of confidence associated with their smile and investing in teeth-whitening techniques can be an effective solution. Studies suggest that not only can you experience a boost in your level of confidence, but also you may find that other advantages quickly fall into place.

A confident smile can affect:

  • Personal and work-related relationships
  • Job interviews and meetings
  • Success when dealing with customers and potential clients
  • Your personality and general happiness with your age
  • Overall outlook on daily interactions

A Real Effect on Daily Living

All of these benefits can relate directly to how you see yourself. When you are insecure with something as prominent as your smile, it can affect the way that you handle your life, everything from social gatherings to professional situations.

Now is the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your smile. With the right teeth-whitening product and regular hygienic practices, walking down the aisle or starting the new semester with the utmost confidence has never been easier.

Celebrate Labor Day by Getting Away

August 27th, 2025

Labor Day honors the contributions that workers have made to this country, and for many Americans, the holiday is a great time to relax at home with family and friends. But there are quite a few people who celebrate the holiday by getting out of town, with an estimated 33 million people traveling more than 50 miles over Labor Day weekend each year. If you’re dreaming of a great Labor Day escape but you’re not quite sure where to go, here are a few ideas from our team at Gremban & Gremban Dental to give you some travel inspiration.

Explore a National Park

On a national holiday like Labor Day, it’s only fitting to experience the beauty of America’s landscapes by heading to the nearest national park. If you’re confined to an office most days of the year, national parks can provide a relaxing and scenic escape, whether you’re by yourself, traveling with a group of friends, or bringing the whole family along. Depending on how close you live to the nearest park, you can stay for an afternoon or for longer than a week. With 58 parks located in 27 states, there are plenty of beautiful areas to choose from.

Chow Down in a BBQ Haven

Barbecuing is a popular Labor Day activity, but instead of sweating over your own grill or oven, try visiting one of the country’s BBQ capitals. U.S. News and World Report names Memphis as the top BBQ destination, with more than 80 BBQ restaurants in the city, most notably Corky’s BBQ and Central BBQ. Kansas City is also known for the sweet taste of its sauces, while central Texas is said to have perfected the technique of smoking tender and flavorful brisket.

Relax on the Beach

Many people think of Labor Day as the unofficial start of fall, which brings cooler temperatures, more rain, and for many people, an end to lazy days at the beach. End your beach days with a bang by taking a trip to one of the coasts or to a lakeside beach. For an added dose of festivity, find a city or town that celebrates the occasion with a fireworks display over the water.

Whether you’re looking to turn your getaway into a full week affair or you simply want to experience a quick escape, make the most of your holiday by changing your surrounding scenery. Happy Labor Day from the dental practice of Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban!

Dental Adulting

August 20th, 2025

Now that you’re entering the working world, or heading off to college, or pursuing any of the many adventures awaiting you in adult life, you’re ready to take on more adult responsibilities. And one of those responsibilities is making sure you maintain your dental health.

Luckily, it’s not that hard! Successful adulting often means simply making small proactive choices which add up to big long-term benefits. So, let’s look at a few of the everyday habits of dentally successful adults.

Choose a Healthy Lifestyle

  • Eat well.

Just like the rest of our bodies, our teeth and gums need a healthy diet to thrive. Sugar-fueled study sessions and energy drink-filled work hours should be the rare exception, not the norm. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals keeps gums healthy and enamel strong.

  • Don’t use tobacco products.

Cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking, chewing tobacco—any form of tobacco products, especially combined with alcohol use, can greatly increase your chances of developing mouth and throat cancers.

  • Talk to your doctor about the HPV vaccine.

HPV (human papillomavirus) can also cause mouth and throat cancers. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the HPV vaccine for kids ages nine through 12. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, talk to Drs. Darrin and Greg Gremban about the potential benefits of the HPV vaccine.

Keep Up with Your Orthodontic Care

If you’ve spent several of your teen years in braces or aligners creating a beautiful, healthy smile, you don’t want to see all your hard work go to waste. Retainers are designed to make sure your teeth stay just where they belong for a lifetime.

When retainers aren’t worn as directed, especially when braces or aligners first come off, the teeth can shift back to their old positions. Sometimes going back to your regular retainer schedule can fix any minor movement, but sometimes patients need to go back for repeat orthodontic treatment.

How to avoid orthodontic do-overs?

    • If you have a retainer, wear it as scheduled to maintain your alignment and healthy bite.
    • Put your retainer in a case when you’re not wearing it. A bent or broken retainer won’t keep your teeth aligned properly and can damage delicate oral tissues!
    • If your retainer is damaged, see the dental team at Gremban & Gremban Dental in Eagle River ASAP for repair or replacement.

 Practice Good Oral Hygiene

  • Brush at least twice a day, for two minutes each time.

Plaque begins to build up within hours after your last brushing. Removing plaque morning and evening also removes the cavity-causing bacteria which live in plaque. These bacteria erode enamel and lead to cavities.

  • Floss at least once a day.

Flossing helps remove plaque from your gumline. When plaque accumulates over time, it becomes tartar, a substance so hard that you’ll need a dental professional to remove it. The bacteria in plaque and tartar irritate your gums, and this irritation is the beginning of gum disease. Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with better brushing and flossing habits—but, even better, help stop gum disease before it starts with daily flossing.

  • See your dentist regularly.

If you’ve had the same dentist since childhood, you’ve probably developed a great partnership, typically visiting your dentist twice each year for an exam and a professional cleaning.

Make sure you make space in your busy adult life to keep your smile its healthy, sparkling best by continuing to schedule regular cleanings and exams. This is the best way to clean away any plaque or tartar you may have missed, and, most important, to catch any small problems before they become bigger ones.

Not so difficult, right? In fact, you’ve probably adopted most of these healthy habits already. Take charge of your dental health now, make good habits a part of your daily routine, and you’ll be prepared to enjoy a lifetime of healthy, attractive, adult smiles!
